News from CES

So, who knew? The boys were in Las Vegas today (Jan. 8, 2008) at the Consumer Electronics Show, A HUGE trade show where all the big technology companies show off their latest toys and gadgets. J and B were there to promote Comcast and their super-cool whateverness. I’ll post more info as I come across it but for now here is a short rundown of what went on…

  • From paidcontent.org:

Sidenote: I rode down the escalator with Jemaine of the Conchords after their appearance at the end of Roberts’ keynote. When I asked if this was the strangest group they’d performed for, he said, no, that would be a cricket club in Wellington, New Zealand.

  • From cabletechtalk.com:

From cabletechtalkSaving the best for last, the event was closed out by New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo Flight of the Conchords. As seen in the photo, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement showed off their integrated media center, which consisted of a disposable camera, taped to a cell phone, and then thrown on top of a TV equipped with rabbit ears (antennae augmented with foil).

They closed by singing their hit song of seduction, “Business Time.”

  • From engadget.com:

10:08AM - Jermain and Brett of Flight of the Concords takes the stage with a girlfriend wanted sign. They go on about about how they need to use the internet to get girls, cause there aren’t many girls here. He says “there are actually more girls on the internet there there are in the world.” Brett shows his invention, the “camera phone” which is a camera taped to a disposable phone. Now they bring out an old TV with and integrate it with tape as well. They continue to make jokes, which plug all the new Comcast technologies. “Is it tru2way”, “no that’s pretty much why I need a girlfriend.” Now they kick off with the song “it’s business time”

  • From the sfgate.com:

    From sfgate.com
The keynote address closed with an appearance by the comic music duo Flight of the Conchords, who have a show on HBO. They provided some of the funniest moments of the keynote, riffing on convergence, the lack of women at CES and the true dirty meaning of tru2way. At one point, Bret brought out an old TV which he paired with a cell phone taped to a disposable camera. He threw in a tooth brush and declared it a wonder of convergence.

“Is it tru2way,” asked Jermaine of the TV.

“No, that’s why I need a girlfriend. I did some 1way last night in the hotel room,” said Bret.

  • From the LA Times:

But the biggest moment, by far, was a live performance by Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, the stars of HBO’s quirky comedy “The Flight of the Conchords.” McKenzie demonstrated his own multi-platform devices — including a “camera phone” with a disposable camera taped to a phone. The New Zealand folk duo sang their most popular song, “Business Time.”

Yes, Roberts agreed, “it’s business time.”

Great pictures and info from the event. Unfortunately, the Conchords were cut from the video of the keynote event. I don’t understand how no one captured the performance with video (especially since this was Comcast’s moment to dazzle with technology). Hopefully, some video of the performance will surface because it is evident from the snippets from the press that the banter was very funny. Finally, to Jemaine and Bret, welcome back to the states. Your fan base wishes you all the best in the new year.

HA! I know! I waited all freakin’ afternoon for the webcast to be posted and they cut their entire performance! But we did get the CEO at the end saying “like they said “It’s Business time”"… :<
