Sherry from WTF shares her views on series

The National Post’s Ampersand Blog has a commentary written by Sherry de Andres (of WTF!) about the HBO series. As a “new fan” (I first saw them on HBO’s One Night Stand in 2005) I’m interested in everyone’s view on this. (At least I think I’m new..I know I’m not a old fan.. maybe a middle fan?)

I find it admirable of her to be so candid about her take on the HBO series.

As they say, the book is always better than the movie; the first is always better than the re-make, etc.

I’m a new fan, so I purchased their BBC series for the back story to the television version, and can kinda see where’s she’s coming from. Their radio characters are distinct if compared with their t.v. characters.

Nonetheless, I’m glad they took the leap and made Season one. Had it not been for the HBO series, I would not have known about these two talented guys.

There’s obviously more to the ‘chords than what we have seen on television. From what I gather, that was Sherry’s point.

In my opinion, true fans, new or otherwise, will find that out for themselves with time.

    Here’s to looking forward…

I do appreciate Sherry’s honesty in this piece. I suppose it’s like my good friend said
“I think the longer you have been a fan, the more loyalty you have to them, but also the more expectations.”

I think it is a miracle that the guys got the show on the air and it wouldn’t have been accomplished without all the people involved. I can’t see how they did it, they were writing and filming the tv show, Jemaine was doing press for EVS (and he did ALOT of press), both were busy trying to write and record the next CD..which was postponed from an October release (I suppose something had to give.) It’s amazing everything they accomplished in a year. My point is I loved the show and even with the not so great episodes I still thought the season was pretty solid. Knowing that the guys will be able to take the time to write and they will be able to write at home in Wellington with their NZ comedians and friends.. I think next season will be Golden.
But take my opinion with a grain of salt, I am a self confessed “Mel”, I generally adore everything the guys do and I buy whatever I can associated with them. I still haven’t found the holographic underwear, if you see them please send me a message. ;)

I see Sherry’s point of view. However, it was the HBO series that got me hooked and has made me a loyal fan. It wasn’t the first viewing that did that because I didn’t understand what I was seeing. Also, I also didn’t have any expectations because I didn’t know who they were. But the magic was there because after a couple of episodes and repeat viewings, I fell in love with the quirkiness and totally different life that was portrayed on the show. It was a point of view that was missing on television and refreshing to find. For me, it is as if I saw the movie and then fell in love with the book. I think the moment that will resonate forever is the Talking Stove bit where Jemaine cheers Bret up. I wanted to watch more because what they did was so unexpected. It’s as if they were walking through a world that I wanted to visit. Not having seen them live, I can only view them “live” on my computer screen and get glimpses of who they are from press coverage and sites such as this one and WTF. Because my son steered me to the HBO One Night Stand special and to You Tube, I have been able to glimpse from a distance of time and space the comic genius in the live performances that all led to the television series. From these viewings and readings, I see glimpses of this “slow-burn” and the hard years and work it has taken to reach this place of well-deserved recognition. The show is Jemaine and Bret but not them as they are playing different versions of themselves. I imagine the frustration that Sherry must feel in the disconnect between the stage version, the real people, and the characters they play on the show. Also, I think that most first seasons of shows do not hit their stride in the first season. It takes time. There is a lot to be hopeful about as evidenced in the dance they do at the end of Episode 12. This dance is a revelation as they dance off their frustrations and at the same time it is such an expressive total abandonment and giving into the moment. If only everyone’s approach was so affirming and totally in the moment. I guess I just want to say that it is unlikely that I will ever be able to see them live. Therefore, I appreciate even more the invitation to enter their world that the series offered. The series will always be a special place to visit and enjoy on its own merits. Hopefully, some day, they will visit Chicago and I will be able to see them live.
