On a brighter note, there was a show which made its debut on Monday night to little fanfare. It was a shame, because The Flight of the Conchords (Prime 10pm) is that rarest of all beasts, a Kiwi sitcom being shown on American television.
Wellington duo Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie are two unlikely lads who are so deadpan in their delivery there is no point looking for a pulse. It is zany, bizarre, and so dumb it borders on genius.
The plot, or what there is of it, is so basic it is devilishly clever. They are a couple of down but not out singer-musicians trying to crack the big time in New York. Think Seinfeld meets the Monkees.
Shown on the giant American cable network HBO, a second series has just been commissioned. Have a look. You might think it’s stupid to start with, and to end with, but as Rachel Hunter once famously observed, it won’t happen overnight, but it will happen. Or something like that.
