New Poll about Privacy

Ok, so I have 2 or 3 more sightings of the guys and I would like to know if I should post this kind of news or not. Tell me what you think…

Which is hotter on Jemaine?

I think the sightings are great- I mean, it’s not like the sightings will really affect their safety. By the time it’s been posted, they are loong gone! And it’s pretty unlikely that someone will take the effort to fly/drive/whatever to wherever the last sighting was. If someone wants to stalk them, they will figure out a way to locate them regardless of the sightings. I think they’re fun and entertaining! luv, roz PS- tried to vote but it kept saying I’d already voted!

I don’t think personal sightings should be posted. Professional, yes absolutely. Personal, no. The guys need space to be themselves when they are not FOTC. Being wickedly funny and putting together more shows (looking forward to it) and completing their album (will definitely buy) takes creativity. Creativity needs room to breathe and expand. Let’s all help them keep some semblance of personal privacy in a world that is rapidly embracing and loving the music and comedy of this unique band. Keep posting their work and professional appearances (especially if they are ever in Chicago). However, let’s give them the time and space to explore and evolve. Truly, they are the best. Thanks guys. Love this website!!!

I think posting random sightings on the street is a really bad idea. It gets into major weird and mildly psycho territory. And I feel like it will “ruin it” for the fandom to turn it into this crazy celebrity worship thing instead of just enjoying the material. It shouldn’t be about the individuals as actual breathing people, but about the comedy, right? I would feel embarrassed to visit a site that was all “OMG!! I FOLLOWED THE ONE WITH A BEARD BACK TO HIS HOUSE AND HID IN HIS BUSHES WITH MY CAMERA PHONE !!111!!!” It’s kind of beneath us all, right?

I think, instead, you should just post “fan encounters” at shows and CD signings and work-related things like that. Just my two cents.

    Hi Everyone,
Yeah, I had to chime in too. I voted “It depends” and here is why.
I don’t like it as part of the main alert section of our emails. I would rather see information about the guys work and interviews etc. They will start to get weirded out by our “American Obsessiveness” soon enough.
If there are sitings, and apparently people want to know what they are doing, then have a ’sitings’ section on this page. No big  alerts, just add it on somewhere and those who wish to see can and those who don’t won’t have to.
Honestly, though, I checked them out as I am sure everyone has…but I really don’t need an email alert.

    Hey Ryche,
I understand about not wanting an email alert for a sighting..I just wanted to explain that I use feedburner to run all that. The emails are sent out automatically every day and it lists every post I’ve made since the last one. You might prefer the RSS feed instead.. give it a try!

My vote was, “it depends.” Random sightings are always fun, but there’s stuff that’s really none of our business. The best rule of thumb would be to put ourselves in their shoes.

Otherwise, I’d always love to know if they’re ever in my local area doing promotional events.

Keep up the great work Nicole!

my vote is for no sighting notifications…its slightly creepy…you have to put yourself into those guys’s situation..what would you think if a crazed fan was posting stuff online on where you are/were?…i mean i suppose its kind of weird for me to say because i live in topeka (and the likelihood i’ll see either one of the guys is slim to none)..but i still think we should give the guys their space

Hi there Nicole et al –

After much thought, I voted NO. Please see my post under the “Yet another Jemaine sighting” article…. and, to that, I would like to add a very sober note:

In a more innocent time, detailed reports of random celebrity sightings were fun, exciting, and a harmless hobby for avid fans.

Unfortunately, our collective innocence was lost on 8 December 1980, when a brilliant, quirky, talented man loved by millions of fans worldwide (Yours Truly included) was senselessly assassinated in front of his own home, in the presence of his wife, by a deranged, obsessive individual who had fixated upon and stalked him for a long time beforehand. John Lennon’s tragic death felt like the loss of an old friend to me; I will never cease mourning him, and I don’t ever want another celebrity I love to be cut down by a stalker.

That’s why Gawker Stalker and other such online “services”, while seemingly entertaining, make me a bit queasy. For every 999,999 fans who find these celebrity sightings innocuous fun, there may be just one with the same mindset as Mark David Chapman. And, unfortunately, one is all it takes to destroy a precious and irreplaceable life.

Certainly, there have been posts to various sites of what might be called *encounters* with Bret or Jemaine — which differ from random sightings in that they relate fans’ actual meetings with our beloved Kiwi boys. One such encounter, posted on IMDb, was by a lovely young woman who ran into Jem at an ATM, and had her photo taken with him by her boss (who was with her at the time). She posted the photo — which was adorable! — and spoke in glowing terms of Jem’s warmth, beauty, and sweetness.

But this very wise young woman made certain NOT to give the exact location of the ATM, or even the neighborhood — just the city. I’m certain she knew that such information carried the potential for abuse of Jem’s privacy, or perhaps even danger to his safety.

Such *encounter* stories, even ones with photos, are perfectly harmless as long as no specific location details are given. (Club gigs and performances, of course, are an exception — those are public appearances and thus do not constitute violations of privacy.)

But please, no Gawker Stalker posts or random sighting announcements! I love the Conchords too much to let anything bad happen to them at the hands of so-called “fans” (or anyone else).

    With appreciation from
    your concerned Conchordian compadre,
    Jemainiac
