Basically the reviewer “liked it didn’t love it.” Which is odd since she says “Eagle versus Shark will either hit the bulls eye for some, or miss the dartboard completely for others.” In any case, she does say some very nice things and encourages everyone to see it. What more can we ask? See the video on TV3’s web site.
It is a love story, but not as we know it.
Our nerdy, geeky Romeo and Juliet are about as far from Shakespeare as you can get, and I suspect their kind of poetry will be embraced by an entirely new generation of romantics.
Lily’s had a crush on Jarrod for ages… her moment comes when she gate-crashes his “Come as your Favourite Animal” party… her shark eyes, and his Eagle eye meet across a crowded room… and the rest, is Eagle versus Shark.
Lily becomes wingman to Jarrod’s vengeful angel… as he returns home to beat up his primary school nemesis.
This is a great first feature outing for Taika Waititi, and a brave one. There are several moments of pure magic here that would have missed their mark under the guidance of a lesser talent.
But here’s the thing… more than any other film I’ve encountered in recent memory, I feel there’s very little middle ground here.
Eagle versus Shark will either hit the bulls eye for some, or miss the dartboard completely for others.
Which kinda makes my job as a critic pretty redundant… as in this case, you really need to see it, to know where you’ll sit.
I liked Eagle versus Shark, but I didn’t love it.You may, and I urge you to see it to find out.
3 and half stars from me.
