(c) 2007 New Zealand Press AssociationLeading North American distributor Miramax Films has announced a 1st June release date for Taika Waititis wickedly offbeat debut feature EAGLE vs. SHARK. The film has also been honoured with selection at three major international film festivals.
EAGLE vs. SHARK has its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival next Tuesday. Miramax will launch the film at this prestigious North American festival. Following Sundance EAGLE vs SHARK travels to Europe to screen at the Berlin and Rotterdam Film Festivals. Taika Waititi and lead actress Loren Horsley will attend the festivals to introduce the film.
Taika Waititis short film TWO CARS, ONE NIGHT won an Academy Award nomination and premiered to acclaim at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.
Written and directed by Taika, EAGLE vs. SHARK displays a refreshingly different take on the romantic comedy. Its a funny, fractured romance between two misfits, woven into an all-consuming quest for revenge, and shot through with the strange, sweet hilarity of the human condition.
Loren Horsley plays Lily, an awkward lonely waitress, opposite Jemaine Clement as Jarrod, a self-obsessed candle maker.
The strongly comedic cast also includes Brian Sergent, Craig Hall, Rachel House and Joel Tobeck.
The film is produced by Ainsley Gardiner (TWO CARS, ONE NIGHT) and Cliff Curtis, and executive produced by Emanuel Michael. The film is set to the mesmerizing sounds of Wellington based The Phoenix Foundation.
EAGLE vs. SHARK is financed by the New Zealand Film Commission with international sales handled by Kathleen Drumm, New Zealand Film.
Later this year EAGLE vs. SHARK will be released in Australia by Icon Film Distribution and in New Zealand by Hoyts Distribution on behalf of Icon.
